Using a Local Architect -The Benefits
When it comes to embarking on a construction or renovation project, engaging a local architects can bring a myriad of benefits. Local practices have a great understanding of Local Planning restrictions, understand regional styles trends of existing houses, and possess an intimate knowledge of the local environment. These advantages make them an invaluable asset in creating spaces that work well in their context.
Below, I outline what I consider the main benefits of employing me as as your local architect.
1. Knowledge of Local Planning Legislation: Every Council has a Local Plan which must be considered in conjunction with the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Engaging me as your local architect ensures that your project designer knows your Council requirements and design guides, and can design to accord with these whilst ensuring you get the extension to suit your aspirations and needs..
2. Relationships with Local Contractors and Suppliers: I have established relationships with local contractors, material suppliers, and other professionals in the construction industry. These connections can be instrumental in ensuring smooth project execution, I can recommend reliable, skilled contractors and consultants and even source quality materials. Moreover, established relationships may also lead to cost savings and faster turnaround times (particularly with consultants such as Structural Engineers & Party Wall Surveyors).
3. Understanding of Local Culture and Context: I have a great understanding of the local vernacular architecture, culture, history, and regional context, having attended the University of Kent. I can craft designs that align with the community's architectural heritage, incorporating elements that resonate with the local identity. Alternatively, I can also design architecturally contrasting (but complimentary) elements to suit your preferred design style. This approach engenders sense of place and creates extensions and buildings that are harmonious with their surroundings, enhancing the overall aesthetic and cultural value of the local area.
4. Enhanced Collaboration and Communication: Being a local architect enables me ample opportunity for face-to-face collaboration and communication. This is particularly important when defining the brief of your project (I’ve written a piece about briefing your architect here). Being physically present also allows for easier site visits, meetings, and discussions, which facilitate a higher level of engagement. During the course of the construction of your project, there can be times when a contractor requires additional input on a detail, and a site visit is the best way forward.
5. Support for the Local Economy: Choosing to work with a local architect contributes to the growth and prosperity of the local economy.
